About Me

Page

Greetings! First of all, thank you for taking the time to find out who I am and what I am about. My name is Bob Rice and I am a Certified Personal Trainer through NCCPT, which is NCCA accredited. I live in the Columbus Ohio area.

I specialize in training in the privacy of your own home. I assess my clients goals and weaknesses, while giving them guidance towards better fitness and nutrition. I believe in a basic approach of movement and sensible eating. Body weight exercise, light resistance training, and an increase in your metabolism will lead you towards your goal. Don’t forget proper nutrition and hydration.

My wife suggested I look into a career of fitness after coaching her through a life changing weight loss of over 200 pounds.  Read about her amazing transformation on my website at http://www.guidancefitnesspt.com/testimonials.html

Maybe I should I start with my own transformation. I drove concrete trucks in Arizona and Ohio for over 25 years. Somewhere along the way, I also picked up an affair with alcoholism. It wasn’t until the death of my brother in 2007 and the collapse of the housing market, not to mention my life, that I started to question my own mortality. I was not heading down the right path. My drinking led to a divorce and the realization that I passed up many opportunities in my life, including being a better dad.

My spare time when concrete deliveries slowed down, gave me a chance to get back outdoors and begin hiking again. I had always enjoyed camping, fishing, hiking, anything outside. With the playground of granite outcroppings and elevation changes in Prescott, Arizona as my back yard, it was time to explore more. The combination of exercise, diet and the reduction of calories from excessive drinking, began to make quite a difference in me. I was feeling better about myself.

After my son graduated from college, I moved back to Ohio. I had been in contact with a girl I went to school with and we ended up marrying in 2010. My wife wanted to be able to join me in my hikes and adventures and not be left behind. She committed herself to changing her lifestyle. I in turn, continued to remind her of who she wanted to be. She missed the days of fishing, hiking, going out to do things on a whim and taking the road less traveled, much like I had. Together we began a new destiny.

Making changes in our diet, by cutting out fast food, alcohol, fried this and that and multiple sodas a day, continued to pay off. The success my wife was experiencing was unbelievable. To help her through her own issues of self worth and awareness, I suggested she begin a self defense class. I did some research and chose Dynamic Self Defense of New Albany, Ohio for their realistic approach. No gimmicks or flash, just usable techniques. She began taking classes and the improvements were great. I soon joined and we both now participate together.

I recently discovered road biking. Yes, bicycling. Getting outside and riding for miles is a fantastic cardio workout for me and I am participating In my first ride. The Bike MS Central Ohio ride. I am fundraising for the 50 mile ride on July 12th. I never thought I’d be one of those bikers. I must say that I am thrilled to participate.  Feel free to stop by:  http://main.nationalmssociety.org/site/TR?px=13521064&pg=personal&fr_id=23916

As I mentioned earlier, my wife suggested a personal trainer course so that I could help others. I studied the nutrition and exercise fundamentals and passed my exam. The continuing research of healthy foods, supplements and developing exercise programs is an enjoyable benefit. Knowledge and the application of it are awesome! I look forward to all of the relationships that I develop through Guidance Fitness Personal Training LLC.

You don’t need a life long commitment to a gym or prepackaged meals to get you there. If you never played sports or weren’t active before, you can start now. This is a life change for you. Start moving and eating better. It is not too late to start.

  1. Bob, I have a suggestion for a post. Years ago we were told to to do exercises 3x a week for an hour, then 30 minutes 3x a week, and now I’m hearing there are significant benefits from even a few minutes several times a day…

I’ve had some illnesses so activities are much harder for me so I started taking walks daily and on good days, I’ve built up to 2 miles with some hills. I’m often exhausted after for a long time! On bad days, sometimes it’s just a few blocks. I would like to get an idea on how one finds a personal “zone?” where one can enjoy the most benefit without over doing…

I’m wondering if the 2 miles has the best pay off – it takes about an hour, sometimes an hour and 10 minutes – would 30 minutes twice a day be just as good? Is 15 minutes 3 times a day better? What about 10 minutes several times a day?

You see what I’m getting at, I hope – Is there a magic number where the pay offs are better for the time/energy expended?

    • Without knowing exact details as to your personal medical history, and the signing of a medical release and liability contract, I honestly couldn’t say what is going to be ‘your’ best routine. You can however achieve benefits from mini workout sessions. The biggest challenge is to be able to mix up your workout every couple of weeks so that you don’t become accustomed to the same routine. The body has to be challenged with either more weight, speed, duration, sets, repetitions and so forth, but under the watchful eye of a Certified trainer. If you are not asked to sign a medical release and have not gotten the approval to exercise from your physician, then you are putting yourself at the risk of injury or death. I know this is very blunt , but it is a serious issue. I wish I was close enough to be able to take the time to go over some questions with you and set you up with a routine. Walking is a beneficial form of exercise, but if you are exhausted as you say, then it does throw up red flags to me. I hope you see my side of this. Your future health does revolve around your current ability and I would start from there. I hope this helps answer your question. You are always welcome to email me as well. In fitness, Bob
